Welcome
Welcome to the homepage of the Project Beyond the Borders: the history and archaeology of Northern Greece. The project aims at investigating the material culture of the ancient regions of Thessaly, Epirus and Macedonia from the Archaic to the early Roman period by cutting across the modern territorial borders of Greece, Albania and FYROM.
Through the study of the archaeology and material culture of these regions and having in mind the wide variability and complexity of manifestations of ancient Greek culture we aim at:
- Recreating the ancient territorial and cultural links within the areas under investigation;
- Redefine their borders on the basis of similarity and difference;
- Challenge current paradigms that see them as passive peripheries, outside the mainstream of Greek culture.
The project began in September 2014, is generously funded by the OUP Fell Fund and the Faculty of Classics, and enjoys the support of an international network of institutions and dedicated scholars.
The first phase of the project focused on Epirus. We will gradually expand to include Thessaly and Macedonia. The website and the interactive map will be updated as we go along; please follow us on this page.
